Working with nature, producing real food and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal Wine Estate. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded in 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories.
In 2013 Boschendal was acquired by new owners, led by Sam and Rob Lundie, with the intention of
rejuvenating this magnificent property. Over the past two years they have attracted a team of talented people who share their dream of making Boschendal into a top agricultural farm; a farm that produces sought after naturally produced food and great wines; and a farm where the natural environment thrives and local communities prosper.
Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and an acclaimed wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food.
Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages.
Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.
Given our exceptional winemaking heritage of almost 300 years, the Boschendal cellar masters meticulously balance rustic tradition and modern innovation to produce classic, fruity wines while upholding the ecological integrity that has become synonymous with our brand.
Each wine range, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, is carefully crafted to deliver ultimate drinking pleasure, with dedicated red and white winemakers in separate cellars for focused expertise. It is this attention to detail that makes us a leader in the production of Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines and beloved brand in over 50 countries.
The cornerstones of this philosophy are accomplished by our commitment:
- To produce premium wines of unwavering exceptional quality
- To have dedicated red and white winemakers in separate cellars for focused expertise
- To place emphasis on intensity of flavour and mouth feel
- To further our special focus on Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz varieties
- To be a leader in the production of Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines
- To invest in oak from top coopers with judicious wood regimes for added intrigue but never overpowering

Eat & Drink
The Cape colony has its roots as a refreshment station; a welcoming stop for weary travelers where food, wine and hospitality were never in short supply. Similarly, the Cape Dutch farms that fanned outwards from the harbour at Table Bay offered some of the finest hospitality in the land, and the ‘Cape table’ was always laden with fresh farm produce and delicious local cuisine.
On Boschendal today little has changed, with our restaurants offering an array of authentic culinary experiences. First and foremost our focus is on provide flavourful and nourishing farm-to-table food; celebrating the bountiful produce of Boschendal and the Franschhoek valley with menus that shift imperceptibly with the seasons. Much of the fresh produce you’ll find on your plate is sustainable grown right here on Boschendal Farm, and where possible we source other ingredients from farms and small producers in the surrounding winelands.
In fact, across our restaurants we work hard to keep food miles to a minimum: three-quarters of the ingredients on our daily restaurant menu are sourced within 30-kilometres of the farm.
With such a wonderful array of local produce on offer, it’s little surprise that our team of skilled chefs under Executive Chef Christiaan Campbell conjure up a mouth-watering feast of dishes at restaurants across the estate.

Rhone Picnic baskets can be enjoyed at carefully-laid out tables or on a picnic blanket under the shade.
